Stem-cell-based embryo models (SCBEMs) are 2D or 3D structures derived from pluripotent stem cells, guided by mechanical and chemical cues to mimic early embryonic development. They are powerful tools for studying development, disease modeling, drug screening, and regenerative and reproductive medicine. The field is rapidly advancing, with increasingly complex models incorporating embryonic, extraembryonic, and maternal components, aided by innovations in bioengineering, synthetic biology, and cell-instructive biomaterials.
This meeting will highlight the latest SCBEM advancements, showcase cutting-edge tools for modulating dynamic niche signals, and explore applications from understanding early human development to disease processes. By bringing together an interdisciplinary community in this nascent field, the symposium will foster collaboration, consolidate the emerging research, and emphasize the translational potential of SCBEMs for both basic research and clinical applications.

NXR Bioinformatics Workshop: Xenopus meets single-cell analysis
April 18 - April 25, 2026
If you are curious about single-cell analysis (and other bioinformatics skills), come to Woods Hole this Spring.
The 2026 workshop format will be a wet-dry-hybrid exercise, specifically emphasizing single-cell analysis. Many Xenopus researchers are working on single-cell data these days. By working together for two days on tissue dissociation and cell quality checks, participants get an idea of how to apply this approach in their own Xenopus experiments.
Basic topics in bioinformatics, such as environment setup, RNA-seq/ChIP-seq and Proteomics analysis, will also be covered.

In partnership with the African Genomics Data Hub (AfriGen-D) and the Sickle Africa Data Coordinating Center (SADaCC), the ABI is proud to be involved in the 19th Annual International Biocuration Conference for the International Society of Biocuration (ISB). This is the first time the conference will be hosted on the African continent, scheduled for the 20th to 24th April 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa. The 19th Annual International Biocuration Conference provides a forum for curators, developers, and users of clinical and life sciences data, knowledge, and models to discuss their work, promote collaboration, and foster the community around this active and growing area of research. This conference is organized in part with the International Society of Biocuration (ISB).

Evolutionary Applications of Pan-genomes PEQG Doorstep Meeting is a 3 hour workshop that will probe the challenges and benefits of pangenomics, through the lens of evolutionary, population, and quantitative genetics. European Amphibian Conference (EAC) 2026
July 3–5, 2026, in Prague, Czech Republic
The 5th European Amphibian Conference’ will take place at the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, from the 3rd to the 5th of July 2026. More than 100 outstanding scientists from all over the world will present their latest research and discoveries based on amphibian models, mainly Xenopus and salamanders (including axolotl).
The expertise and scientific interests of these researchers are wide-ranging from developmental biology to molecular and cellular biology including stem cells, cancer, regeneration, organogenesis, genetics/epigenetics, neurobiology, ecotoxicology, ecology, and integrative biology.
The meeting allows our community to share insights into state-of-the-art technologies in biochemistry, microscopy, high-throughput analyses, multi-omics approaches, and genome engineering. This process is essential to confirm and foster the strength of amphibians as valuable model organisms for high quality research in translational medicine.

Disease Models & Mechanisms – Innovative Preclinical Models for Pediatric Cancer Research

Cancer in children represents ∼3% of the global incidence of cancer. Pediatric cancer exerts an outsized impact: beyond the physical and emotional toll on children, their families and the community, the number of years of productive life lost to pediatric cancers is proportionately higher than that of adult cancers. In the treatment of children and adolescents with cancer, multimodal approaches combining surgery, chemotherapy and radiation can cure many patients, but may cause lifelong health problems in survivors. Current therapies only modestly reflect increased knowledge about the molecular mechanisms of these cancers. Advances in next-generation sequencing have enabled unprecedented cataloguing of genetic aberrations in tumors, but understanding how these genetic changes drive cellular transformation, and how they can be effectively targeted, will require multidisciplinary collaboration and preclinical models that are truly representative of the in vivo environment. This meeting aims to focus on models and technologies that have the potential to transform our understanding of these diseases.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including autism, intellectual disability, and epilepsy, arise from disruptions during brain development and pose major challenges to public health. Although advances in genetics have identified hundreds of causal genetic risk factors, identifying convergent mechanisms underlying their pathobiology remains a challenge, which hinders the development of personalized therapies. This meeting addresses the critical gap between emerging insights into causal factors, neurodevelopment, and therapeutic innovation by uniting experts across basic and translational neuroscience.
The proposed conference will foster new collaborations between investigators in genetics, functional genomics, developmental neurobiology, and industry. Specific aims include showcasing breakthroughs in single-cell genomics, genome perturbation technologies, gene-environment interactions, and novel therapeutic strategies such as gene replacement therapies and ASOs.

Purpose The mission of the Division of Neuroscience and Behavior (DNB) is to discover, facilitate and promote outstanding basic animal and human research aimed at identifying the causes and consequences of drug addiction across the lifespan and to guide treatment strategies. The Genetics, Epigenetics, and Development (GED) Branch within DNB supports research on the genetics, epigenetics, and developmental mechanisms that underlie addiction and substance use disorders (SUD).
Research areas of general interest include but are not limited to:
-
human and animal genetic studies of vulnerability to addiction,
-
molecular genetics and genomic studies related to the response to addictive drugs,
-
epigenetic mechanisms of substance use disorders and addiction,
-
cell biology studies of addiction,
-
development of neural pathways and brain structures that mediate SUDs and addiction and
-
bioinformatic approaches to better model the genetics of SUDs, including data integration, methods development, epistasis analysis, and machine learning.
NIH has issued the Data Management and Sharing (DMS) policy (effective January 25, 2023) to promote the sharing of scientific data. Sharing scientific data accelerates biomedical research discovery, in part, by enabling validation of research results, providing accessibility to high-value datasets, and promoting data reuse for future research studies.
Under the DMS policy, NIH expects that investigators and institutions:
- Plan and budget for the managing and sharing of data
- Submit a DMS plan for review when applying for funding
- Comply with the approved DMS plan
